Sunscreen isn’t seasonal—it’s essential. Every day you want your skin to stay healthy, radiant, and age gracefully, SPF should be a part of your routine.

In this SKIN-VESTMENT series, I don’t just want to tell you to wear SPF—I want to show you why it’s one of the smartest things you can do for your skin.

Let’s break it down with the SKIN acronym:

S: Symptom or Skin Concern

K: Knowledge / Education

I: Ingredient Insight

N: Next Steps / Product Recommendations

S – Symptom or Skin Concern

“Why do I have these brown patches?”

“Why am I getting wrinkles even though I don’t tan?”  “I never burn—do I really need sunscreen?”

Sound familiar?

These are some of the most common questions I hear. Whether you’re dealing with hyperpigmentation, premature aging, or stubborn sun spots that won’t darken in the sun—the truth is: Sun damage is sneaky. It affects all skin tones, all skin types, and all ages—especially here in Arizona, where our UV index is dangerously high most of the year.

K – Knowledge / Education

📌 90% of visible skin aging is caused by UV exposure. Not stress. Not age. Not even genetics. The sun is the silent saboteur—breaking down collagen, triggering inflammation, and worsening pigmentation every single day.

And no, you don’t always feel it. Even on cloudy days. Even indoors.

☀️ Three types of light are damaging your skin:

  • UVA (Aging): Penetrates glass, damages collagen, deepens fine lines.

  • UVB (Burning): Causes sunburns, skin cancer, and visible irritation.

  • HEV (Blue Light): From your phone, laptop, and LED lights—leads to inflammation, pigmentation, and barrier breakdown.

Sorry to tell you, yes, your skin is aging from your screen time, too.

Insider Scoop: What is HEV Light?

With selfie culture in full swing, it stings to realize that we’re aging ourselves with every snap and scroll. HEV (high-energy visible) light does more than disrupt your circadian rhythm—it accelerates photo-aging, weakens the skin barrier, and triggers inflammation.

If you struggle with uneven skin tone, melasma, eczema, or rosacea—HEV makes it worse. Why? Because it stimulates melanocytes (your pigment-producing cells), deepens discoloration, and fuels an inflammatory response that lingers.

What Does SPF Really Mean?

SPF = Sun Protection Factor — a measurement of how well a sunscreen protects against UVB rays (the burning kind).

Sad truth, it doesn’t protect against UVA unless the label says broad spectrum.

Here’s what you should know:

  • SPF 30 = allows you to stay in the sun 30x longer without burning than unprotected skin

  • SPF 50 = blocks only about 1% more UVB than SPF 30

  • SPF isn’t bulletproof → real life (sweating, swimming, under-applying) affects efficacy

To Get the Full Protection:

  • Use enough → nickel-sized amount for the face; 2 fingers or 1 shot glass for body

  • Reapply every 2 hours (especially after sweating or sun exposure)

  • Layer up → hats, sunglasses, shade

What Are Sun Spots?

Sun spots (a.k.a. solar lentigines) are flat, brown or tan patches caused by cumulative sun exposure. Unlike freckles, they don’t fade with the seasons—they’re often permanent.

Why don’t they darken anymore? Over time, chronic sun exposure can burn out the melanocytes (pigment cells). Think of it like your melanin "maxing out." This can result in pigment that no longer responds visibly to sunlight.

In some cases, these spots go deep—down to the dermal layer—which is why they appear grayish or stubborn. But even if they don’t darken in the sun anymore, sun exposure is still making things worse beneath the surface.

I – Ingredient Insight

Let’s break down the two main types of sunscreen:

Mineral (Physical) Sunscreen

  • Ingredients: Zinc oxide, titanium dioxide

  • How it works: Sits on top of skin and reflects UV rays

  • Best for: Sensitive skin, post-treatment, rosacea, pregnancy

✅ Pros: ✓ Immediate protection ✓ Reef-safe ✓ Non-irritating ✓ Pregnancy-safe

❌ Cons: May leave a white cast (tinted versions help), heavier feel

Chemical Sunscreen

  • Ingredients: Avobenzone, Octinoxate, or Homosalate

  • How it works: Absorbs UV rays and converts them into heat

  • Best for: Daily wear, deeper skin tones, oily skin

✅ Pros: ✓ Lightweight ✓ No white cast

❌ Cons: May sting eyes, potential for irritation, not always reef-safe

Bonus Ingredients to Look For:

  • Niacinamide: Calms, brightens, strengthens

  • Azelaic Acid: Evens tone, pregnancy-safe, melanin-friendly

  • Green Tea: Fights oxidative stress

  • Hyaluronic Acid: Hydrates + plumps without heaviness

For My Holistic Glow Seekers

It’s totally valid to feel cautious about ingredients. Many holistic clients express concern over chemical SPF, especially when they hear terms like “hormone disruption” or “toxic.”

Yes—chemical SPF concerns are valid. But here's the truth:

  • FDA regulates SPF ingredients for safety

  • Most formulas use less than 6% of active ingredients

  • No conclusive studies link these levels to hormone disruption in humans

Still concerned? Mineral SPF is a safe, effective option.

Final Thoughts

✨ Skincare isn’t a quick fix. It’s a long-term relationship with your skin.

✨ Correcting pigment takes time, consistency, and the right combination of ingredients.

✨ Wear your SPF daily and consider investing in treatments like LED and chemical peels, and your glow will thank you.

We always should be considering shade whenever we are out and wear protective clothing and hats when out for extended periods of time.

✨ Stay mindful of peak hours (10 AM - 4 PM) when burning rays are the most damaging. Even by checking the UV index and staying indoors when the rates are highest, we can lessen our overexposure to sun damage.

SPF is definitely your skin's most smartest asset but do consider dietary support and nutrition absorption. Foods rich in antioxidants like vitamin A, C and E (think brightly colored fruits and vegetables) and healthy fats like omega-3's from fish or monosaturated fats from avocados and olive oil, are always a good option, not only to combat the free radicals from UV exposure, but help your skin renew and repair.

Investing in sunscreen is like opening a savings account for your skin. You won’t see the returns overnight—but in 10, 15, 20 years? You’ll be so glad you did.
